An Innovative Approach to the Clinical Health Care Workforce Crisis

Hosted by the American Hospital Association
Case Study: Minnesota and M Health Fairview

The AHA Futurescan 2022-2027 identified 'Workforce' among 8 key trends affecting hospitals. In recent years, workforce challenges have become more acute, exacerbated by the effects of COVID. Increasingly, states are engaging around their unique populations, political environments and health system dynamics. Collaborations between policymakers and employers will be critical to assessing and acting on each state’s unique workforce trends.

During this webinar, we will examine how one state, Minnesota, and one health system,  M Health Fairview, are working to address these workforce challenges. We will highlight research and information on Minnesota’s current and future labor market and discuss how policymakers, employers and workers can optimize their decisions today for tomorrow's prosperity.

During this session, we will share how the state of Minnesota, a community of employers, and M Health Fairview are evaluating:

  • Evolving labor force demographics and total workforce numbers over time, including the workforce makeup by generation (baby boomer, Gen X, millennial, Gen Z, etc.) and the impact of more women entering the workforce

  • Real median household income to show changes in earnings behavior

  • State employment breakdown by industry

  • Immigration trends over time

Attendees will learn how macro labor market research can inform workforce planning and how a strategic approach to research, policy, organizational design, education, human resources and technology can come together to solve workforce challenges.
